Gordon College of Education Past and Present Gordon College of Education was established in 1953 by merging the Teacher’s Seminary of the Labor Movement with the Teacher’s Seminary of the well-known science high school, the Haifa Reali School. From its foundation, it has focused on the development of teaching skills and furthered Zionist, Jewish and humanistic values. It is the only teacher’s college in Israel to receive the prestigious Education Award. From 1953 until 1995, Gordon College awarded teacher certificates, and in 1995 Gordon College became an academically accredited institution, certified to award its graduates the Bachelor of Education Degree (B.Ed). Currently, Gordon College offers a four year program leading to this degree. Gordon College is a center of teacher enrichment programs under the auspices for the Ministry of Education of Northern Israel. Gordon’s teaching staff includes more than 200 members who hold degrees of higher learning ranking from full professor to lecturer. The faculty staff is actively involved in developing learning materials and in research in the field of education. Thousands of educators participate in conferences and enrichment programs taking place throughout the year at the college. Our faculty and student body reflect the multicultural character of Israeli society. Most Jewish ethnic groups, including immigrants, as well as many of Israel’s minority groups: Circassians, Christians, Moslems, and Druze are represented in our student population. Approximately 10% of our students and some of our staff are immigrants from the former Soviet Union. As a teacher’s college, Gordon’s staff closely supervises their students who are sent to over 100 different schools in the north for their student teaching experience. By being closely involved in the reality of Israeli schools, the staff is fully aware of the multicultural nature of Israel’s population and the need to address the issue of teachers working in a multicultural setting. Moreover, as a School of Education, Gordon College believes that one of the major problems today in Israeli society is the lack of understanding for others, and especially after the waves of immigration in the 1980s and 1990s this problem has grown rather than lessened. The lack of tolerance towards cultural differences, prejudice and negative stereotypes of different ethnic and minority groups are all problems that we feel must be addressed in a concrete manner. To take on this challenge of developing a dynamic program to deal with issues of Multicultural Education in Israel, in January 1997 Gordon College established the Multicultural Educational Resource Center (MERC). MERC is the first multicultural educational resource center of its kind established at any teacher’s college in Israel. It is aimed at promoting pluralistic values based on mutual respect and understanding and enhancing attitudes of tolerance and coexistence between different cultural, ethnic, religious and secular groups in Israel. Among Gordon College’s well respected departments is the English Department. The English Department puts a strong beginning emphasis on proficiency and linguistics in the early years for students entering its 4 year B.Ed. program. These theoretical studies are soon coupled with three years of intense practice teaching and methodology, under the guidance of mentors, both from the college and teachers in the field, working closely with the students. A special one year program for candidates holding an academic degree, who wish to retrain as English teachers, has been running at full capacity for 9 years. more info on English Department and fast track for English speaking BA holders |
